LivableCities: Mehr Grün für eine lebenswerte Stadt Saarlouis

Die Europastadt Saarlouis ist Partnerstadt im internationalen Forschungsprojekt „LivableCities“. Zusammen mit fünf weiteren Städten aus Nordwest-Europa und weiteren internationalen Partnern aus Forschung, Bildung und Lehre werden Lösungen für eine grünere, gesündere und klimaangepasste Stadt entwickelt.

Gemeinsames Projektziel ist es, die Herausforderungen des Klimawandels und zunehmender Extremwetterereignisse mithilfe von „blau-grüner Infrastruktur“ zu begegnen. Darunter sind beispielsweise die Entsiegelung und Begrünung von Flächen, Dach- und Fassadenbegrünung, unterirdische Regenwasserspeicher oder auch bepflanzte Versickerungsmulden zu verstehen.

Das internationale Projektteam entwickelt eine gemeinsame Strategie für den Ausbau dieser blau-grünen Infrastruktur. In Saarlouis werden schwerpunktartig mobile Begrünungselemente erprobt. Mit diesen flexibel einsetzbaren Grünelementen werden auch städtische Flächen begrünt, auf denen Entsiegelung und Bepflanzung nur schwer umsetzbar sind. Ziel ist es, hitzebelastete Aufenthaltsbereiche zu begrünen und diese mit anderen Grünflächen zu vernetzen. Als ökologische Inseln tragen diese Grünelemente somit auch zum Erhalt der Artenvielfalt in der Festungsstadt bei. Des Weiteren wird ein Wartungs- und Austauschsystem entwickelt, mit dem die Pflanzen langfristig in einem guten Zustand gehalten werden können.

Nicht zuletzt werden mithilfe des Projekts die messbaren Effekte von mobilem Grün auf Luftqualität und Mikroklima ausgewertet. Im engen Austausch der Partner baut das Projekt Wissen auf zu blau-grüner Infrastruktur, Biodiversität und Klimaanpassung. Dieses wird anschließend an Wissenschaft, Lehre, Verwaltung, Planung, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft weitergegeben.

Angesiedelt ist das Projekt in Dezernat III im Amt für Transformation und Klimaschutz. Gerald Purucker, Dezernatsleiter und Beigeordneter der Stadt Saarlouis sieht im Projekt eine große Chance von dem gegenseitigen Austausch mit den beteiligten Städten Landau, Straßburg, Cork, Utrecht und Antwerpen im Hinblick auf eine klimaangepasste Stadtentwicklung zu profitieren.

Ansprechpartner innerhalb der Verwaltung ist Marc Engel. Er möchte durch die enge Kooperation mit den Projektpartnern Wissen rund um eine klimaangepasste Stadtentwicklung in der Stadt Saarlouis aufbauen. Großes Potential sieht er zudem darin, dass Saarlouis mithilfe des Projekts einige der am stärksten von Hitze und schlechter Luft betroffenen Plätze begrünen kann.

LivableCities: Integrating blue-green infrastructures (BGI) for livable and sustainable cities

The European city of Saarlouis is a partner in the international research project “LivableCities.” Together with five other cities from Northwestern Europe and additional international partners from the fields of research, education, and academia, the project is developing solutions for a greener, healthier, and climate-resilient city.

The joint goal of the project is to address the challenges posed by climate change and increasingly frequent extreme weather events through the use of “blue-green infrastructure.” This includes, for example, the removal of impervious surfaces and the greening of land, green roofs and facades, underground rainwater storage systems, and planted infiltration basins.

The international project team is developing a joint strategy for expanding this blue-green infrastructure. In Saarlouis, the focus is on testing mobile greening elements. These flexible greening elements are being used to green urban areas where soil restoration and planting are difficult to implement. The goal is to green recreational areas affected by heat and connect them with other green spaces. As ecological islands, these greening elements thus also contribute to preserving biodiversity in the fortified city of Saarlouis. Furthermore, a maintenance and replacement system is being developed to keep the plants in good condition over the long term.

Last but not least, the project will assess the measurable effects of urban greenery on air quality and the microclimate. Through close collaboration among the partners, the project is building knowledge on blue-green infrastructure, biodiversity, and climate adaptation. This knowledge will then be shared with the scientific community, academia, government agencies, planners, policymakers, and civil society.

The project is based in Department III of the Department for Transformation and Climate Protection. Gerald Purucker, head of the department and deputy mayor of Saarlouis, sees the project as a great opportunity to benefit from mutual exchange with the participating cities of Landau, Strasbourg, Cork, Utrecht, and Antwerp with regard to climate-adapted urban development.

The point of contact within the administration is Marc Engel. Through close cooperation with the project partners, he aims to build expertise in climate-adapted urban development in the City of Saarlouis. He also sees great potential in the fact that, with the help of the project, Saarlouis can green some of the areas most severely affected by heat and poor air quality.
